There is nothing like photographic evidence and live witness accounts.
Above you will see a photograph dating somewhere between the 1930s and the 1950s. My guess is that the photo dates to the 1940s. Those better-versed than me in the American history of military, automobile, and fashion matters should be able to further date the above photo very easily.
The above photograph was take from the south facing north, up Piermont Avenue. What the above photograph shows is the Sunoco Gasoline Station situated on what is now 447-477 Piermont Avenue in the Village of Piermont, New York. You will see the Sunoco Gasoline Station on the right-hand side of the photograph above the bicycles. Here's a close-up of the right-hand side of the same photograph:
Below, on the other hand, is a photograph of the same Sunoco Gasoline Station, but now with its Sunoco Gasoline Station pumps appearing on the left-hand side. This below photograph was ALSO taken from the south facing north, up Piermont Avenue - yet the photographer of this, second photograph was standing a bit farther to the east than where the photographer of the first above photograph was standing.
No external gasoline tanks are visible in the above second photograph, and therefore it is obvious that there are one or more underground gasoline tanks are servicing those Sunoco gasoline pumps. Back in those days when they decommissioned a gasoline station, they typically did not dig out the tanks as opposed to just cover them up. Whether they even siphoned out the gasoline from the tanks before hustling out of Dodge, is an open question.

... Pictured... are some photos (circa 1940) of the Sunoco [G]as [S]tation... The former use of this site as a gas station will require the removal of underground storage tanks, soil contamination testing[,] and potential remediation... This can be a long and costly process that may extend well beyond the proposed development site.
The protection of public health from any soil pollutants due the corrosion [of] underground storage tanks is of particular importance. That said, the health and safety of our Piermont residents must be prioritized over ratables that provide tax income for municipalities".
